Vintage Mid Century Textured Oil Painting Stenton Paris Sacre Coeur Montmarte
This is a beautiful piece of mid-century Americana—a vintage 1970s textured oil painting depicting a classic Parisian street scene, looking toward the iconic dome of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre.
This piece features the highly desirable, heavily textured "sandy" impasto style that was immensely popular in the late 1960s and 1970s. The artist used a grit-mixed oil paint technique to give the architecture, autumn trees, and strolling figures a striking three-dimensional quality and fantastic tactile appeal. The piece is signed "Stenton" in the lower left corner.
What makes this particular painting a great find for collectors of retro home decor is its perfectly intact history on the back. It still bears the original gallery sticker from Creative Galleries, Inc. out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Creative Galleries was a famous 1970s "home party-plan" art distributor, meaning this original hand-painted piece was originally purchased at a lively living room exhibition decades ago. It features its original heavy wood frame, complete with vintage warehouse inventory stamps on the reverse.
The painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition with wonderful color preservation. Measuring approximately 10 1/2 x 12" including the frame, this charming piece is ready to hang and will add the perfect touch of authentic MCM character to any gallery wall or vintage-inspired space.
