Offered is an exceptionally well-preserved Red Wing RumRill art pottery vase, Shape No. 291, dating to the 1932–1937 Red Wing production period.

This attractive small-form vase has a softly rounded, bulbous Arts & Crafts-era profile with a distinctive scalloped/pinched, undulating rim and raised circular foot. The exterior presents in a softly muted celadon/seafoam green with ivory undertones, contrasting beautifully with the warm golden-yellow/orange interior.

What makes this example particularly interesting to collectors is the original impressed identification on the underside.

The Bottom Bears:

291- the impressed shape number
RUMRILL- the impressed maker/brand identification

Both markings were examined under directional/raking light and are physically impressed into the pottery rather than being photographic artifacts. The 291 can also be felt by touch as a shallow depression in the clay.

Red Wing Collectors Society documentation identifies Red Wing RumRill pieces by their characteristic three-digit shape numbers and notes that pieces produced for RumRill were usually incised with the “RumRill” name on the bottom. Red Wing manufactured RumRill pottery from August 1932 through December 1937.

A Note About the Glaze

We have intentionally not assigned a historical finish name to this particular glaze because we have not found sufficient documentation to establish one conclusively.

Instead, the glaze is described here as observed: a soft celadon/seafoam-green and ivory exterior with a contrasting golden-yellow/orange interior.

This approach preserves the documented facts while allowing the buyer or collector to compare the piece with known RumRill finishes.

Condition

This is an exceptionally clean example.

The distinctive undulating rim was carefully examined both visually and by touch. No chips, nicks, rough spots, or areas where the glaze appears to stop short of the rim were detected. The edge is smoothly finished and continuously glazed.

The pottery exhibits normal characteristics associated with age and manufacture, including fine crazing and minor firing/surface irregularities. These characteristics should not be confused with damage.

The underside likewise retains the expected character of an older ceramic piece, including its original impressed markings and natural age-related surface characteristics.

Historical Note

George Rumrill worked with Red Wing as a marketer/salesman of art pottery, while Red Wing manufactured the pottery itself. The Red Wing Collectors Society identifies the Red Wing RumRill period as a distinct collecting category from the later Ohio-produced RumRill pottery.

This example\'s RUMRILL marking together with the three-digit No. 291 shape number is consistent with the Red Wing production system.

A documented RumRill No. 291 example sold through on June 30, 2019 for $350, although that example was described as having the Nokomis finish. Because the finish on the present vase has not been conclusively identified as Nokomis, that sale should be viewed as a historical reference rather than a direct valuation of this particular glaze.

Fine age-related crazing and minor firing/surface irregularities are present and are consistent with vintage Red Wing pottery production.
