Published by John Bartholomew & Son Ltd at the Edinburgh Geographical Institute, this beautiful large folding map covers the Isle of Skye, Wester Ross and surrounding western Scottish Highlands and islands.
The map includes Skye, Broadford, Loch Snizort, Loch Bracadale, Strathaird, the Cuillin Hills, Loch Slapin, Kyle, Glenelg and extensive surrounding coastal and mountain country. An inset continues the mapping across the Sound of Sleat.
Printed at a scale of approximately 1:126,720 — half an inch to one mile — it features Bartholomew\'s distinctive layer colouring, with elevation represented in graduated greens, browns and pale mountain summits against vivid blue seas and lochs.
This is the mounted-on-cloth edition, retaining its original blue card cover. The cover is marked “Four Shillings Net” and “Great Britain, Sheet 54 – Skye and W\'r Ross.”
The map appears to date from approximately the 1940s. I have not identified a definite printed publication date on this copy, so the date should be regarded as approximate.
A particularly attractive original piece of mid-20th-century Scottish cartography, with wonderful detail of Skye and the rugged western Highlands.
