Vintage Traditional Tana Toraja Sekomandi Ikat Wall Hanging/Blanket. Sulawesi, Late 20th Century.A hand spun cotton resist-dyed warp ikat in four vegetal colors; natural (by reserve), terracotta-orange (Morinda tree bark), blue (Indigo) and a combination of the orange and blue creating a dark brown color. The stitched together two-panel design has a main field of a classic ancient design of repeating interlocking geometric patterns, a genealogical motif with stylized legs and arms, representing a multigenerational communal embrace. The main field is bordered by anthropomorphic Tau-Tau (ancestors) in reserve. The textile is completed with a long twisted fringe intrinsically from the ends of the warp threads (approximately 4 to 7 inches long) on either end. Cloths such as this were used in ceremonial rituals, as well as, blankets and wall hangings.Condition: Minor signs of use and wear otherwise fine condition.Size excluding fringe, warp: 66 in.
