these are authentic late-1970s Wizard Wheels.
The physical wheels in the second photo match the period advertisement exactly:
• Distinctive diamond/crosshatch tread pattern (the ad claimed “60 individual diamond-shaped gripping surfaces”).
• Size consistent with the advertised 2″ × 2¼″.
• Hand-poured urethane construction (visible in the translucent red example and the overall texture/finish).
• “PAT. PEND.” (patent pending) molded into the side of at least one wheel, matching the ad’s “Foreign and domestic patents pending” note.
• Colors typical of mid-to-late 1970s urethane (solid greenish/olive and translucent red).
Context
Wizard Wheels was a small Costa Mesa, California company (address on the ad: 1760 Monrovia Ave. #A-18) that made these specialty high-grip urethane wheels during the late-1970s skateboarding boom. They were marketed for better traction, speed, and performance on steep terrain and for slalom, at a time when urethane had only recently replaced clay/composition wheels and makers were experimenting with tread patterns
Like many small 1970s wheel brands, they appear to have been short-lived; surviving examples with the original diamond tread and “PAT. PEND.” marking are uncommon collector pieces today.
These are a cool, period-correct find from the early urethane era. RARER THAN RARE!
