Vintage Mid-Century Bronze Figurine - Goddess Athena in Chariot with Horse - Museum Replica Style
Striking stylized bronze sculpture of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom and war, standing in her two-wheeled chariot holding her long spear, led by her powerful geometric horse. Both horse and Athena wear the classic crested helmet plume.
Cast in solid brass/bronze with the classic museum green verdigris wash over polished gold highlights. Flat, graphic, modernist interpretation of ancient Greek Geometric period bronzes (800-700 BC). Chariot rails and axle decorated with Greek key pattern, spoked wheels with 3 spokes.
This is the popular museum shop version sold in the 1960s-1970s as an Alva Studios / Metropolitan Museum of Art / MoMA replica. Highly collectible MCM decor.
Details:
• All original - spear is straight, not bent
• Beautiful verdigris patina - high points show warm brass through
• Wheels are fixed, do not roll - sculpture stands securely on 4 points
• Solid and heavy, great patina - no chips or repairs
• Light wear to patina at horse shoulder and Athena belt as expected - see photos
A wonderful piece for Mid-Century, Greek Revival, classical mythology, or Etruscan decor. Looks fantastic on a bookshelf, desk, or mantel.
