The Gasmaske 38 was introduced before WWII as the principal German military Gas Mask and remained in widespread service with the Wehrmacht throughout the conflict. Unlike the earlier M30, which incorporated a rubberized fabric facepiece, the M38 used a molded rubber body designed to simplify manufacture while providing an effective airtight seal around the wearer’s face. The mask was issued with a replaceable screw-on filter and carried inside the familiar cylindrical metal canister, which was normally worn across the body using a long shoulder strap together with a shorter securing strap. The canister was designed not simply to carry the mask, but also to hold small maintenance accessories including an anti-fog cleaning cloth stored beneath the internal retaining spring. German soldiers were also issued a separate Gasplane, or gas cape, carried in its own small waterproof pouch and attached externally to the gas-mask equipment. Together these components formed the standard German personal chemical-protection system and were carried by soldiers throughout the European and Mediterranean theaters even though large-scale chemical warfare was never employed on the battlefield.

Made of molded rubber, painted steel, cloth, leather and metal components, this Gas Maskis in VERY GOOD used condition! The original M38 rubber facepiece remains present together with its original screw-on Filter and complete metal carrying Canister. The Canister retains both of its original carrying straps, including the full-length shoulder strap and shorter securing strap, components that are frequently missing from surviving examples. Internally, the Canister retains its original Cleaning Cloth together with the correct Spring retainer used to secure the cloth inside the compartment. The original Gas Cape Carrying Bag is also present and remains with the set. Inside the bag is a postwar Austrian "paper" type Gas Cape used as a replacement display piece (only included to give the appearance of being complete). The Mask, Filter, Canister, Straps, Cleaning Cloth, and Gas Cape Bag are all original wartime components, with the set dating between1942 and 1943. All components show normal service and age-related wear consistent with genuine wartime field equipment, while the overall set remains exceptionally complete and highly displayable.A FANTASTIC and nearly complete original German gas mask set, PERFECT for any WW2 German Wehrmacht, infantry equipment, field gear, medical, or militaria collection or display!
