Original WWI German military postcard from 1914 depicting the intense fighting at Leuven (Löwen), Belgium, during the opening months of the First World War.
The front is titled:
“Straßenkämpfe in Löwen”
Translation: “Street Fighting in Leuven.”
The dramatic artwork depicts German soldiers engaged in close street combat, with rifles and bayonets drawn, casualties in the roadway, civilians involved in the fighting, and buildings burning in the background.
Löwen is the German name for Leuven, Belgium. The city became the scene of major violence and destruction during the German invasion of Belgium in August 1914, making postcards depicting the fighting there particularly interesting pieces of early-WWI history.
The reverse contains extensive handwritten German correspondence and is clearly dated 19.9.1914 (September 19, 1914) — less than a month after the events depicted on the front. The lower-left corner is marked “Serie III.”
This is a particularly striking early-war postcard combining German military history, the invasion of Belgium, urban combat imagery and period wartime correspondence.
Condition shows expected age and handling wear, including toning, rounded/worn corners, edge wear and surface wear. The image remains strong with excellent detail.
