DescriptionThis is an original Japanese military commemorative lacquer tray associated with the Imperial Japanese Army 1st Transport Battalion. In the Imperial Japanese Army, transport troops were responsible for moving food, ammunition, equipment, and other essential supplies. They were the logistical backbone that kept frontline units operating. The tray is specifically marked:“1st Transport Battalion”At the top is a commemorative poem which can be understood approximately as:“With a light body, I carried a heavy duty.
Having completed it safely, how joyful it is to return home today.”Nearby are the words “Glory of the Nation” and “Commemoration.”Together, these inscriptions strongly suggest that this was made to commemorate the completion of military service, a safe return from duty, or a similar important milestone in a soldier’s life. The design features several strongly Japanese military and traditional motifs, including the Army star, Rising Sun flag, cherry blossoms, and a folding fan. There also appears to be a two-character personal name near the lower area. The first character appears to be “Hira/Hei”, while the second is difficult to read because of wear. It may represent the name of the original owner.Another important aspect of this piece is the craftsmanship.Japan has a long tradition of high-quality lacquerware, created by repeatedly applying and polishing lacquer to produce a deep, durable surface. Military commemorative items such as cups and trays were often made using this traditional craft. What makes this example especially interesting is the combination of:a clearly identified military unit, a return-home commemorative poem, military imagery, and what may be the original owner’s name. There is age-related wear, including rubbing, edge damage, and losses to the lacquer and finish. Please examine the photographs carefully. This is not simply an old decorative tray.It is a surviving object connected to the moment when a Japanese soldier completed his duty and returned home.Own a Piece of History.Shipping
