Walther Klemm was a German painter, printmaker, and illustrator noted especially for his graphic work and animal subjects. He studied in Vienna, worked with Carl Thiemann in Prague and Dachau, and exhibited with the Vienna and Berlin Secessions. Klemm later became a professor of graphic art in Weimar, bringing disciplined observation and vigorous handling to his depictions of birds and other animals.
Cockfight concentrates on a group of roosters rendered with dense, energetic strokes of black, brown, red, cream, and yellow. A large dark bird arches across the upper portion of the composition while reddish birds crowd the foreground. The overlapping bodies, emphatic plumage, and heavily worked surface create a compact scene of physical confrontation.
