Complete Six-Volume Limited Editions Club Set – 1938
Illustrated & Signed by Barnett Freedman – Copy No. 1065 of 1500
A beautiful and highly collectible complete six-volume edition of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, published for members of The Limited Editions Club in 1938 and printed at The University Press in Glasgow, Scotland.
Translated from the Russian by Louise and Aylmer Maude, with a special introduction by Aylmer Maude. The edition was designed by John Easton and features distinctive lithographs and drawings by acclaimed British artist and illustrator Barnett Freedman.
This is copy number 1065 of only 1,500 sets produced. The limitation page is personally signed by Barnett Freedman and includes his distinctive red fingerprint, an unusual and memorable feature of this edition.
Included: all six hardcover volumes (Volumes I–VI) and both original slipcases, each designed to hold three volumes.
The books retain their striking original red illustrated cloth bindings featuring portraits of figures from the Napoleonic era. The interiors are clean and well preserved overall. The bindings show age-related fading, rubbing and wear, particularly to the red cloth and along the spines and extremities. The original slipcases are intact but show considerable age-related edge and corner wear, including rubbing, fraying and small losses. Please review photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
An especially appealing edition of Tolstoy’s masterpiece and an excellent example of 20th-century illustrated book design and Limited Editions Club publishing. Complete six-volume sets retaining both original slipcases are increasingly difficult to find.
