Freshwater pearls have been used in jewelry for centuries and are valued for their natural luster and distinctive surface characteristics. Because genuine pearls develop naturally, slight variations in surface and appearance are part of the character of the material.
Freshwater pearl-producing mussels have historically been found throughout major American river systems, including the Ohio, Mississippi, and Tennessee River basins. Freshwater mussel shells and pearls have also played an important role in ornamentation and trade throughout North America.
Navajo pearl beads are associated with the longstanding silversmithing traditions of the American Southwest. Their oxidized sterling silver surfaces create contrast against the white freshwater pearl and give this necklace its distinctive Southwestern styling.
The combination of a large white freshwater pearl focal bead with graduated oxidized sterling silver Navajo pearl beads makes this an unusual alternative to a traditional pearl necklace.
