Harriet Tubman, circa 1945, is an oil painting on paperboard from Johnson\'s Fighters for Freedom series. The composition presents Tubman as a full-length figure in a striped Civil War-era dress, with a firearm at her side. Paths and railroad tracks traverse the landscape behind her, while the North Star appears overhead between the rising and setting suns. At lower right, Johnson included a second representation of Tubman as an older woman wearing a shawl. The Smithsonian American Art Museum notes that Johnson based Tubman\'s principal likeness on a nineteenth-century woodcut reproduced in Carter G. Woodson\'s The Negro in Our Times.
