Some minor shelf/storage scuffs on cover faces. Previous owner\'s small ink stamp on front pastedown (1/4\" x 2\" stamp). Unclear ownership of gift inscription in old ink on first title page. Securely bound and can be handled normally.Includes map folded into pocket on rear pastedown. Moderate toning to outside layer of map paper. Otherwise excellent. Small hole (1/2\") on one of the intersections of the folds.
Mina Benson Hubbard Ellis, born in 1870 in Ontario, is designated a National Historic Person in Canada. Her husband Leonidas Hubbard Jr. died of starvation and exposure on an 1903 expedition to map the interior of Labrador, having taken the wrong river from the outset due to a flawed existing map. In 1905, Mina Hubbard set out to complete her husband\'s work — neither an experienced wilderness traveller nor a trained geographer — and led a party of four skilled woodsmen on a 900-kilometre canoe and portage journey from North West River to Ungava Bay via the Naskaupi and George Rivers. Taking continuous measurements of latitude along the journey, she established the correct positions of the Naskaupi and George Rivers and associated lakes and tributaries. The map she produced was immediately recognized by both the American and British Geographical Societies and remained the definitive cartographic record of the region until the advent of aerial photography in Labrador in the 1930s. The London John Murray edition is the preferred scholarly text: it includes an introduction by William B. Cabot — the foremost contemporary authority on Labrador — that was omitted from the simultaneously published American edition (McClure, New York). The book was not reprinted for seventy-three years, until 1981. Bound in the original red cloth with gilt pictorial design to front board — a canoe with two paddlers beneath the arched title — and gilt lettering to front and spine.
