Description:
Scarce late 19th-century Wm. Pickhardt & Kuttroff dye-stuffs sample catalog, measuring approximately 6.25 x 9 inches. The firm is identified as importers of dye-stuffs at 98 Liberty Street, New York, with branches in Boston and Philadelphia and agencies in Providence, Chicago, and San Francisco.

An especially striking textile-industry trade catalog containing 18 pages of actual dyed yarn samples, displaying a broad spectrum of colors and shades. Samples are individually associated with named commercial dyes and formulas, including Nicholson Blue, Methyl Violet, Fuchsine, Victoria Green, Emerald Green, Orange, Azobenzole Fast Crimson, Eosine, Anisol Red, Methylene Blue, Fast Red, Archil Red, Uranine, Naphthol Yellow, Bismarck Brown, Fast Brown, Victoria Violet, Viridine, Artificial Alizarine and others.

The book also contains 5 pages of printed text, including the contents/table material, with a price list and technical instructions for dyeing wool. The instructional material specifies various dyeing baths, mordants and chemicals and discusses characteristics such as resistance to soap, scouring and milling. The price list divides products into reds, oranges, violets, greens, blues, yellows, browns, grays and blacks, along with extracts, carmines and artificial alizarine.

The numerous surviving yarn samples are particularly appealing, retaining vivid blues, purples, pinks, reds, greens, yellows, oranges and browns. This is an unusual surviving commercial sample book documenting the late 19th-century synthetic dye and textile trades.
