Master\'s Mix is the go-to blend for commercial growers of gourmet and medicinal wood-loving mushrooms for a reason: It supports fast colonization times with large yields at high biological efficiencies, and works terrifically for almost all species of gourmet and wood-loving mushrooms! In our experience, master\'s mix also seems to be slightly-less contamination prone than some other blends, such as sawdust supplemented with wheat bran.
This 5 pound bag of hydrated substrate comes sterilized, sealed, and equipped with a filter patch for gas exchange. It is NOT inoculated and buyer will need to provide their own culture.
Substrate is composed of a 50/50 blend of hardwood sawdust and soybean hulls. Once you add your grain spawn (that you provide) and re-seal the bag, thoroughly break apart the substrate and mix the spawn evenly into it. This will both distribute the spawn, and fluff the substrate, ensuring it is fully blended and allowing easier penetration of the mycelium through the bag.
Bags are guaranteed to be clean and will be checked for defects before shipping.
If you do not plan to use the bags right away, it is advised that you store them under refrigeration.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a lot of talk in various corners of the internet about injecting liquid culture directly into master\'s mix blocks. This approach can work, sometimes, but has a very low success rate, requires large volumes of liquid inoculant, takes substantially longer to colonize than grain spawn, and produces smaller yields. The typical method of inoculation is to use liquid culture for grain inoculation, and then use the grain to inoculate the master\'s mix. So please be very suspicious of any advice telling you that liquid culture direct into master\'s mix is a good strategy, it simply is not. :-)
