LATE QING HAND ENGRAVED COPPER FOOTED BOX
EXQUISITE RAISED CANTON ENAMEL PANELSLate 19th century Canton enamelware produced in large quantities for western export typically portrays static predictable subject matter in a harsh palette. This example from my personal collection of small boxes is distinctly different. The cover cartouche of geishas under a tree amid stylized shrubs, grasses and rocky outcroppings is sensitively painted in thin polychrome enamels with fine black lines on a white ground. The scalloped panel with pointed ends and complementary elongated panels on front, sides and rear wall of the box relate closely to coveted 18th century Chinese porcelain. The box is equally atypical; shallow engraved overall with cloudwork on a stippled ground. Almost hidden small \"precious objects\" surround the cover panel and embellish rounded corners of the box.
The cover mounts on a three knuckle hinge, opening to white enamel interior. The underside of this heavy box on compressed ball feet is also enameled.
