Up for sale is an original (1837) Waterbury, Connecticut Hard Times store card token issued by Benedict & Burnham (HT-104a / Low-172, R-3). Struck in copper with a plain edge, approximately 29mm.
The obverse features a sharp bald eagle with shield and arrows, surrounded by \"BENEDICT & BURNHAM / WATERBURY CONN.\" The reverse displays \"MANUFACTURERS OF EVERY DESCRIPTION OF SHEET BRASS\" surrounded by an ornate decorative border. The token exhibits strong AU details with chocolate-brown copper surfaces and honest circulation wear.
