A captivating gemstone that appears green under natural light but changes to wine-red or red hues under incandescent light, lamps, or candlelight. Ranked among the world’s three rarest gemstones, this gem—with its mysterious color-change effect—is also known as the “King of Gemstones” and “God’s Mischief.”
Since large rough stones are rarely found, the value skyrockets for even a 1-carat stone; however, the value of an Alexandrite is said to depend primarily on the intensity of its color change, regardless of size.
As a gemstone variety, it is a variant of Chrysoberyl. It forms when a portion of the aluminum in Chrysoberyl’s composition is replaced by trace amounts of chromium(Cr) or iron(Fe), and the color change is caused by this chromium. Alexandrite was first discovered in 1830 at the Tokovaya emerald mine on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains in Russia.
Since it was an emerald mine, it was naturally believed to be an emerald at first. However, once its unique property—the ability to dramatically change color depending on the lighting—was discovered, it was presented to the heir to the throne at the time, the future Russian Emperor Alexander II, in recognition of its magnificence. The name “Alexandrite” derives from this emperor.
Production from this Russian mine was nearly exhausted in just 200 years.
Today, it is mined in Russia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, Tanzania, and other locations. Alexandrites from sources other than Brazil and Russia exhibit a slightly more subdued color change, but their more affordable prices make them attractive.
Recently, some gemological laboratories have begun classifying only those stones that exhibit dramatic color changes as Alexandrite, and opinions may vary depending on the laboratory. However, according to traditional classification, stones that faintly display a soft, pinkish-red hue are also recognized as Alexandrite, allowing you to fully enjoy the unique phenomenon of color change.
