The TASCAM Portastudio was the world's first four-track recorder based on a standard compact audio cassette tape. It remains one of the most popular of the "old school" analog Portastudios, making them increasingly hard to come by.The term Portastudio is exclusive to TASCAM however it is generally used to describe all self-contained cassette-based multi-track recorders dedicated to music production. To increase the quality of the recording, the 414 uses high-speed recording, 3-3/4 ips, twice the normal speed of a standard audio cassette.The Tascam 414 streamlined the four-track format, ditching the VU meters in favor of simple, segmented LEDs. Tascam then added a pair of line-level inputs, bringing the total number of inputs to eight and allowing for two stereo effects returns. The 414 also added support for an optional foot pedal to be used for hands-free punch-ins. This feature proved indispensable for solo artists. Though advanced for its time, this iconic unit may scream “lo-fi” by today's standards. But with so many artists discovering new and innovative uses, some actually using it as an instrument, the popularity of this versatile little deck has skyrocketed!The 414 weighs in at just 4.5 lbs and measures 14.5" x 9.75" x 4" tall!

Condition:We have decided, with the amount of work required to make these fully functional, we will only perform this particular refurb on cabinets that justify doing a refurb. Therefore, this rare deck is in "Very Good" condition with minor signs of use and a nice, clean control panel! Aside from the typical scratches to the base, there may be a few light scuffs or scratches to the cabinet. The door plexi is clear with minimal scuffing and all the original knobs are present & complete while some may have minor yellowing. The original Power Supply has gone missing so we are including the new, overrated supply we used throughout testing. Unit is dismantled and inspected to determine if any previous amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacement

Heads are checked for flaws or excessive wear; highly worn heads indicates excessive wear to the entire transport so they are taken out of service

The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed

All switches & pots can be cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers)

While apart, all PC boards are inspected & questionable solder joints are re-flowed. To prevent future issues, all input/output jacks are re-flowed, whether or not they appear to need it

All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, any questionable components are replaced with overrated components

All faders are treated with DeoxIT F5, specifically designed to both clean & lubricate fader controls

Any faulty components, such as jacks, LEDs, feet, etc., are replaced

Cassette transport mechanism is cleaned & lubed with non-petroleum based lube to assure long life

All switches on the transport are thoroughly cleaned and adjusted to prevent intermittent stoppage

All belts are replaced w/ high-quality neoprene belts

Other rubber components, such as idler wheels & pinch rollers, are inspected and either rejuvenated with Rubber Renue, or replaced if questionable

All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, any questionable components are replaced with overrated components

Audio levels calibrated & balanced

Tape path is cleaned and heads demagnetized

Tape Speed calibrated

Testing:Once serviced, this deck was set up on our test bench and all switches, functions and LED indicators work correctly, with all inputs and outputs confirmed as operational. The cassette deck also works correctly with a clear, steady playback at high-speed with minimal wow & flutter. We recorded a short test tape to all four tracks, using all four channels, and played it back with no issues. More testing was done, still there are a multitude of other features on this deck, so we can't test them all. TASCAMPortastudio 414 4-Track High-Speed Cassette Recorder
This is a cassette based (1/8") 4 track recorder that records on high bias, type II cassettes in a single direction. It has DBX type II noise reduction, but on my used machine this had drifted, so recordings sounded better without it engaged. DBX on track 4 can be disengaged separately for timecode purposes. There is a pitch wheel that allows for 15% plus or minus speed change, putting the wheel to the maximum speed will cut down on some of the tape hiss.
There are four main channels which correspond to the four tracks. There are faders for these channels along with high and low eq knobs and pan controls. There are two stereo channels, 5-6 and 7-8 that can be used for effects routing or as auxiliary inputs. These channels only have volume knobs without an other control. Inputs are all 1/4" and RCA. All four tracks can be recorded onto simultaneously.This machine is very suitable for people who just want to get on and record, rather than endlessly mess with the equipment. On now, many musicians are using the 414 as an instrument to create effects, loops, and much more!
