With their high build quality and impressive performance, Pioneer is recognized as one of the premium makers of high-end equipment for the audiophile since the late \'30\'s!Released in 1976 with its high-performance tuner and direct-coupled OCL power amplifier, the SX-650 retailed for $300, that\'s over $1,700 today!One of the classic mid-range receivers offered by Pioneer in the mid 70’s was this Pioneer SX-650. As you can see it has the classic silver face styling of Pioneer’s 50 series which, when coupled with the wood case, makes for an exceptionally clean and stylish looking receiver. It\'s FM section provides a excellent sensitivity and superb stereo separation. Advanced electronic circuitry throughout includes a low-noise FET FM front end, and a high-fidelity phono equalizer with 30Hz to 15kHz RIAA equalization with less than ±1 dB deviation.The SX-650 produces 35 W + 35 W continuous RMS power (both channels driven at either 8Ω or 4Ω) with Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 0.3% through full spectrum. But reduce the power and that drops to an impressive 0.05% THD, far below the level detectable by the human ear. Remember, these are what audiophiles call \"Vintage Watts,\" from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings!The front panel has both 1/4\" Headphone and Mic jacks while the rear offers two speaker zones, an Aux Input, two Tape Loops, one with the \"REC/PLAY\" DIN jack found on the higher-end offerings of the era, and stereo Phono Input with a grounding terminal for your turntable! It also has a built-in AM antenna and two AC outlets, unswitched & switched. It weighs in at just under 29 lbs and measures 14-1/2\" x 6\" x 18-7/8\" wide!

Condition:This beautiful receiver is in \"Very Good\" condition with minor signs of use and a nice, bright dial! With nice, clean re-veneered cabinetand re-painted grill, the only things worth mentioning are some pitting to the back paneland a fewfront paneldings andscuffs, some too faint to make out well in the pics. These models have the common issue where the original vinyl veneer peels. This unit came to us with most of the veneer already replaced with real wood Maple veneer, except for the side panels. So we applied the pictured veneer, also real Maple wood, and stained it to match! All original knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AM Antenna & AC cord. The manual had gone missing so we are including the pictured copy. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is includedand all comes in the pictured generic box with custom Styrofoam packing. Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.Service:On inspection, this unit was working just some scratchy controlsanda dim dial, so as with all vintage receivers it went to our tech for servicing.First, Pioneer used certain transistors throughout this model that have known issues after 40 years. So, even though they were still working, our tech insists on replacing these transistors as they will assuredly fail some time in the near future. This included the dual 2SA798 transistors in the power amp which are no longer available, so two NOS components were installed.While our tech does not believe in doing a \"shotgun\" style \"re-cap\" on most gear made from the late \'70\'s on, he does make sure there are no capacitors with detectable or known issues. This receiver had a few of the blue Sanyo caps that are known to fail along with some questionable ones in the power amp, so they were also upgraded.A total of 2 transistor and 8 electrolytic capacitors were upgraded to brand new, high quality parts from Onsemi, Nichicon, Rubycon, etc., no used or NOS components!Just a few lamps were out, but as the rest were most likely going to fail soon all the dial lamps were replaced with long-life LED\'s!But first out tech did a socket upgrade so we had a bigger selection of lamps to choose from!The original incandescents with light blue filters were upgraded to the highly popular CoolBlue LED\'s.But, if you prefer either Royal Blue, Green or Warm White LED\'s that replicate the original incandescents, just let us know BEFORE buying or sending an offer and we will switch it out for you free of charge! Even though still working, both the Power and Stereo indicators were also upgraded so you won\'t have to worry about them either.Once the LED\'s were installed, it started showing the common flickering on power-up. This is a common issue with the power switch on this model, but unlike some of the other Pioneer models we found just refurbishing this one is rarely a reliable fix. So a brand new switch wasinstalledto assured continued performance! It\'s this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!All vintage receivers receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:

• Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacement
• The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed
• While the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced.
• All switches & pots are cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5
• All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatible
• Any faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc., are replaced
• All PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowed
• All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). All questionable caps are replaced with brand new parts, not NOS!
• DC offset is adjusted & channel levels are calibrated & balanced
• Tuner is cleaned and both AM & FM aligned
• Front panel is cleaned & detailed before reassembly
• Cabinet is cleaned & detailed, any wood is polished with Old English

Testing:After servicing, we set it up on our test bench and it did not disappoint, both channels drove our speakers with the warm, distortion-free signal these analog receivers are known for. All inputs and features were confirmed operational and the tuner spins smoothly. We are in a remote area so we did need to use the included antenna to pull in all our local FM stations, activating both tuning meters and lighting the Stereo lamp. Further testing was performed, if there is a specific feature you would like to know more about just let us know before buying. What a great find for the vintage audiophile!
