First, this series of jazz instructional books will allow any student who can read music or tablature to learn jazz single note soloing.The three volumes represent a beginner to intermediate jazz curriculum, yet each volume can stand alone to support jazz education. The author is a master\'s degree educator, guitar teacher and experienced, professional guitarist.

In addition to the detailed instruction of the cover topics for Volume One here are other topics covered. Chapter 1 of this volume also includes extra melody lines to assist the student. Arpeggio examples are given including “spiked” arpeggios along with examples using arpeggios or triads knitted with scale lines and compact harmony structures.This is imperative to the initial creation of jazz lines and phrases. Chapter 2 also gives general guidelines for creating a lead-in and many examples of using the upbeat. In chapter 3, a simple voice leading technique for creating phrases is discussed with examples that adhere to least motion. Also included in chapter 3 are pentatonic shapes, more “spiked” arpeggio and chromaticism for phrase development. A large section of chapter 3 is devoted to chromatic enclosures with several instructional examples.

Chapter 4 also gives a new tool to the student to “anticipate the change” and the instruction begins to create the elements of the “1/2 step” away idea in making connections. They will also have that first exposure to the “altered” scale.Chapter 5 also shows how the pentatonic scale is closely related to Coltrane patterns. Students will see superposition used to create interesting chord voicings. The appendices provide chord formulas and the use of harmony fragments for soloing or for superposition.

There are several solos in the volume with instructional, detailed analysis.

All chapters will have professional examples (Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery, George Benson etc.) and exercises. Students will be able to create jazz on completion of this volume. A total of 83 pages of content.
