\"Finally, in the region where the Black Volta winds through south-western Burkina Faso, the majority of the population is made up of the Lobi, who emigrated form Ghana about 1770; sixty percent of this ethnic group live in Burkina Faso, the remaining in Cote d\'Ivoire. The Lobi do not have masks, but they make a great many sculptures, sacred objects called bateba, figures which should not be considered effigies of ancestors, altough they apparently have a status between supernatural beings and humans. Some types of figures are made in pairs; these represent twins, not man and wife. The Lobi are skilled metalworkers, and they make a great deal of jewelry, amulets and talismans of brass and bronze, created by the lost-wax process.\"
