100 German Men: Documentary began with a simple question asked of strangers on the streets : where are you from? Over more than a year and nearly a thousand encounters, Carroll photographed men who answered \"Germany\", implying heritage rather than birthplace , and who agreed to be photographed. From those encounters, one hundred portraits were selected, each paired with a stereotypically German name: not the subject\'s own, but an assigned one. In this investigation of ethnicity and cultural identity, Carroll examines how history shapes and burdens national self-perception in post-reunification Germany, a moment of intense debate about what German identity could or should mean. The subtitle Documentary quietly implicates the truth claims of the documentary tradition itself: the document records nothing stable, only the gap between self-identification, stereotype, and the photograph\'s supposed authority. The back cover reprints a passage from Norbert Elias\'s The Germans: Power Struggles and the Development of Habitus in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries a key sociological text on German national character and the civilizing process, grounding the work in rigorous intellectual company.First shown at Printed Matter, New York in 1998.
