French copper jeton dated 1694, issued for Joseph d’Estaing du Saillant du Terrail, Bishop of Saint-Flour in Auvergne, during the reign of Louis XIV. An appealing seventeenth-century piece combining ornate ecclesiastical heraldry with the distinctive pelican-and-young design.
Obverse: An elaborate shield bearing the d’Estaing family arms, accompanied by a crown, bishop’s mitre, crozier, and ecclesiastical hat with hanging tassels. The surrounding Latin legend, SIC ME MEA FACTA DECORANT, translates to “Thus my deeds adorn me.”
Reverse: A pelican with outstretched wings feeding its young in a nest, a traditional Christian symbol of sacrifice and devotion. The legend SIC EGO PASCO GREGEM translates to “Thus I feed my flock.” The date 1694 appears below.
