Anne Dacier was the most accomplished woman classicist of her age. Her prose Iliad of 1711 was the version through which most of eighteenth century France read Homer, and it started a fight: when Houdar de La Motte published a shortened Iliad in verse, rewritten to suit modern taste, Dacier answered him in print and reopened the quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns on her own terms. Her Remarques, which follow each book here, are where she argues her case.
As the fourth and final volume it carries more than its share of the apparatus: after the text and remarks come the Table des Matieres to the whole work, indexing the Iliad and the Remarques across all four tomes and the Life of Homer, then the approbation signed Fraguier and the privilege of the King. Engraved headpieces and decorated initials open each book. Other volumes of this set have been listed separately.
Bound in contemporary mottled calf, the spine with raised bands, gilt floral tooling in the compartments and two gilt lettered panels reading L\'ILIADE D\'HOMERE and TOM. IV. Marbled endpapers in red, blue, green and yellow, with red sprinkled edges. Measures approximately 7 x 4 x 1.5 inches.
The gilt on the spine is bright and legible, the marbled endpapers are unusually fresh, and the red edges have kept their color. The text block is clean and sound, the paper crisp, with good margins and no dampstaining; there is a light spot on the title page. The calf is rubbed and scuffed overall and darkened with age, with wear along the edges, loss at the corners and wear at the head and foot of the spine. The boards and joints are firm.
