A nice full leather copy containing 23 folding plates depicting a variety of material related to Mechanics, Hydrostatics, Pneumatics, Optics, the use of globes, art of dialing, and astronomy. Very interesting, eclectic subject matter and a joy to read through.
Ferguson was a self-taught Scottish astronomer and instrument-maker who rose from shepherd boy to Fellow of the Royal Society through sheer intellectual force. My understanding is that he was a very well respected figure for his intellectual competence, and he was a passionate educator. Ferguson was the great popularizer of Newtonian science for the common reader.
