Original 18th-century French royal legal manuscript from Auvergne, written by hand on period laid paper and bearing a prominent official AUVERGNE fiscal stamp with heraldic device.
This is an especially attractive example of an original 1700s French legal/administrative document, distinguished from more commonly encountered manuscript leaves by the large official stamped-paper mark at the head. The mark prominently identifies AUVERGNE and incorporates a heraldic emblem, giving the document an immediate visual connection to the governmental and fiscal administration of pre-Revolutionary France.
The manuscript is densely written recto and verso in an accomplished period legal hand. Its text references Riom and Clermont, important administrative centers of Auvergne, and concerns legal and financial matters involving ecclesiastical/religious interests, property or rents, and monetary obligations expressed in livres. The document therefore survives not simply as an attractive piece of old handwriting, but as an artifact of the legal, economic, and religious administration of Ancien Régime France.
Particularly desirable features include the royal-period provenance, identifiable Auvergne fiscal marking, heraldic imagery, extensive manuscript text on both sides, regional references, and ecclesiastical/legal subject matter. The sheet measures approximately 8 × 9¼ inches and retains its irregular period edges and original folds. Expected age-related toning, staining, creasing, edge wear and small imperfections are present, all consistent with an authentic working document that has survived for roughly three centuries.
