\'Hudibras\' is a long narrative poem which was published four years after Charles II was restored to the throne. The poem follows the knight Sir Hudibras, who is lauded with much praise, and it a satirical poem, directed against religious sectarianism.
The poem was very well received when published, and was very popular, being reprinted many times.
Written by Samuel Butler. Butler is best known for this work, which was very popular when it was first published, being reprinted many times in Butler\'s life.
Illustrations designed and engraved by Hogarth.
Bookplate of Patrick Dudgeon to the front paste down. Dudgeon was a mineralogist and meteorologist, known for founding the Mineralogical Society in Great Britain. His vast mineral collection was of the largest known, and is now mostly held by the Royal Scottish Museum.
CONDITION
In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Front joint is starting, rear joint is a cracked, with some loss of leather to the joints. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Light surface cracks to the spine. Minor marks and discolouration to the boards, mostly to the rear board. Front hinge is strained but firm. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Folding plate facing page 189 with a repair to the reverse. Ink inscription to the head of the title page, and to the head of page i.
