Die Wandlende Seel (translated as The Wandering Soul) is a 17th-century religious allegory originally written in Dutch by Jan Philipsz. Schabaelje, a Mennonite preacher. The book presents a series of dialogues between wandering souls and biblical figures such as Adam, Noah, and Simon Cleophas. Through these conversations, it recounts the history of the world from its creation to the destruction of Jerusalem, illustrating the succession of monarchies and kingdoms, their rise and fall, and emphasizing moral and spiritual lessons. The work was translated into High German by Bernhart B. Brechbill and published in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in the late 18th century, reflecting its significance among German-speaking Mennonite communities in early America.
