Sir William Jones's The Muse Recalled (1781) is an exceptionally desirable example because it survives in its original 18th-century state rather than a modern rebinding.
* Binding & Covers: Original light blue-grey paper wrappers (wrappers are unprinted, as issued). The spine paper is mostly intact with minor chipping at the tips and typical light creasing. The wrappers show mild, age-appropriate surface dust and faint edge-wear.
* Text Block & Margins: Uncut / Untrimmed margins. The page edges remain exactly as they came off Thomas Kirgate’s press, preserving the maximum possible paper size (Quarto).
* Paper Condition:
* Faint, localized foxing and age-toning, primarily visible on the title page and pages 4–5.
* Slight rippling/cockling to the paper, which is normal for handmade 18th-century rag paper.
* No major tears, damp-staining, or text loss. [1]
* Inscriptions & Markings: A small, neat pencil inscription ("39") is visible in the top-left corner of page 8. The text remains entirely clean of ink annotations, highlighting, or institutional library stamps.
1 of 250 copies made.
* Completeness: 100% complete. It contains the 2 preliminary pages (title page and blank reverse) followed by pages 1 through 8 of text. The "FINIS" marker is clearly visible at the bottom of page 8.
