Thisis a superb and unusually well preserved Pennsylvania German heart form tinnutmeg grater, dating to the Federal period, circa 1790–1810. The hinged heart‑shapedlid is decorated with a finely executed punch‑dot heart surrounded by aradiating border, a classic motif associated with late 18th centuryPennsylvania German decorative tinwork. The surface retains a rich, untouched drycharcoal‑gray patina, exactly the surface collectors prize and seldomencounter. The punch‑decorated heart, border pattern, early hand‑punched rasp,and original surface strongly support an attribution to American Federal PeriodPennsylvania German decorative tin shops, active in the late 18th and early19th centuries. The interior contains the original hand‑punched rasp, and thepiece features the scarce and desirable double‑lid configuration, with bothheart‑shaped covers intact and functioning. The hinges are original and sound.The form, decoration, and surface combine to create a particularly choiceexample of and early American domestic tin. The condition is outstanding for an18th / early‑19th century tin grater. No damage, repairs, replacementsor alterations. The bottom has a beautiful even, dark grey patina that is flat anda finger feels smooth on the surface. The sides have no dents, and the top hasnatural curvature around the raised border stamping from the inside and tinypunch decorated center heat from the inside that can be seen under magnification.The inside has solder covering the entire inside of the lid except for the punchdots of the heart. Both lids open properly and close tightly. Dark, naturally occurringoxidation consistent with age and in untouched condition that advancecollectors covet. All the solder is original with lighter areas from handlingoutside, and proper light lead color inside where there is little air for oxidation.A superior, investment‑grade example.
