The 1804-Mo TH Silver 8 Reales was struck at the Mexico City Mint under Charles IV of Spain. This is the portrait or bust type that replaced the pillar dollar in 1772: the obverse carries the king\'s armoured bust and the reverse the crowned Spanish arms between the Pillars of Hercules with the motto PLVS VLTRA. The assayer\'s initials TH and the Mo mintmark identify the striking. Struck in 89.6% silver, the coin contains 0.7859 troy ounces of silver and is catalogued as KM-109. The Spanish colonial 8 reales was the most widely accepted trade coin in the world — the original \'piece of eight\' — and circulated as legal tender in the United States until 1857.
Spanish colonial 8 reales are collected by ruler, date, mint and assayer, a field with a very long tradition and an international following. They appeal to Latin American specialists, to type collectors wanting the coin that underpinned world trade and to American collectors interested in what actually circulated in the early republic. Many pieces show chop marks from Asian merchants, adjustment marks or heavy wear; problem-free examples with sharp portrait and shield detail are considerably harder than the type\'s availability suggests.
