A genuine 1838 Coronet Head Large Cent with surprisingly strong remaining detail for an affordable early American copper.

The obverse retains a clearly defined portrait of Liberty with substantial hair and coronet detail, including readable LIBERTY. The 1838 date remains identifiable, while the surrounding stars and portrait give the coin plenty of recognizable character.

The reverse features a bold ONE CENT denomination surrounded by the classic wreath, with considerable leaf detail and portions of the surrounding UNITED STATES OF AMERICA lettering still visible.

We consider the coin approximately Fine Details. There is an obvious area of old damage on the lower-right portion of the reverse, clearly visible in the photographs and reflected in the price.

Struck at Philadelphia in 1838, this Large Cent circulated more than two decades before the Civil War, when these substantial copper cents were everyday American money. At nearly the size of a modern half dollar, early Large Cents remain one of the most tangible and enjoyable ways to own a piece of 19th-century American history.
