1807 Principles of Eloquence Abbé Maury Pulpit Bar Rhetoric Leather Book:
$129.95

An early American edition of The Principles of Eloquence, Adapted to the Pulpit and the Bar by the Abbé Jean-Siffrein Maury, translated from the French with additional notes by John Neal Lake, A.M.

Published in New York in 1807 by D. and G. Bruce for Thompson, Hart and Co., No. 186 Pearl Street.

A fascinating early nineteenth-century treatise on rhetoric and persuasive speech, written particularly for the worlds of the pulpit and the bar. Maury examines the principles of oratory and rhetorical composition through subjects including metaphor, style, language, argument, Cicero, Fénelon, Bossuet, preaching and the action of the orator. The work occupies an unusual intersection of early American intellectual history, theology, law, education and public speaking.

Bound in period full calf with gilt-ruled spine and red leather title label lettered “Maury on Eloquence.” The front pastedown bears an elaborate early ownership inscription dated 1812, only five years after publication.
