1812/1 Capped Bust Half Dollar – Small 8 Overdate – NGC VF Details (Cleaned)
A genuine early American overdate, authenticated by NGC. In 1812 the Philadelphia Mint saved a die by re-punching an 1811 date with a 2 over the final 1. Look closely at the last digit and you can see the underlying 1. The "Small 8" is one of the two known versions of this overdate.
About the grade (please read)
NGC graded this coin VF Details – Cleaned. That means it has Very Fine wear with plenty of detail in Liberty's cap, curls and the eagle's wings, but at some point in its 200+ year life it was cleaned. Because of the cleaning, NGC did not assign a numeric grade. The surfaces have since mellowed to a natural gray patina, as shown in the photos. Details-graded coins are priced below straight-graded examples, which makes them an affordable way to own a certified early overdate.
