Provenance: All three volumes bear the engraved 1908 bookplate of Sir D\'Arcy Power (1855–1941), distinguished British surgeon, medical historian, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and later Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE). Power was one of the foremost scholars of John Hunter and published extensively on Hunter\'s life and work. The matching engraved bookplates are shown in the listing photographs.
An impressive three-volume antique set from one of the most influential figures in the history of surgery and medical science. John Hunter (1728–1793) is widely regarded as the founder of scientific surgery, and his works remain important references in the history of medicine.
These volumes retain their original 19th-century full leather bindings with attractive blind-stamped decorative boards and spines, raised bands, gilt spine lettering, marbled endpapers, and blue marbled page edges. The covers also bear the gilt crest of the Mid-Essex Hospital School of Medicine, and each volume contains an attractive early 20th-century armorial-style bookplate dated 1908.
Condition
Good antiquarian condition.
The original leather bindings remain sound and attractive with expected rubbing, scuffing, edge wear, and wear to the spine ends consistent with nearly two centuries of age and use. The decorative blind tooling remains visible, and the books display very well on the shelf.
The text blocks are solid, and the interiors are remarkably clean for their age, with light age toning and scattered foxing. No significant water damage or major writing was observed during inspection.
