For your consideration and potential offer is a well preserved 1837 Philadelphia mint 50C Type-II reeded Edge Gobrecht bust Half Dollar fully authenticated, encapsulated, and attributed by PCGS.
1836 marked the final year for the very successful 29 year run of the John Reich designed capped bust lettered edge half dollar (type-I), as the hand powered screw presses used to produce coins were replaced by steam presses. To accommodate this new technology, the half dollar diameter was reduced, the lettered edge was eliminated and replaced with a reeded edge via a closed collar, the banner “E. PLURIBUS UNUM” was removed from the reverse, the alphanumeric denomination marker “50 C.” was replaced with “50 CENTS” (type-II) then “HALF DOL.” (type -III), and lady liberty got a facelift from then engraver Christian Gobrecht. These So called Gobrecht bust half dollars (Type-II and Type-III) ran for a brief 4 years (1836-1839), making them highly desirable to numismatists from beginners to advanced.
This Type-II example has bold devices, smooth glossy surfaces particularly on the obverse, and colorful bronze amber toning. Scarce GR6 overdate variety. The outer rim on the obverse at 12 o’clock has small filed area; barely detectable in the holder and overall minimally detracts from the coins great appearance. Overall a satisfying and scare early U.S. Gobrecht bust half dollar with very fine details and exceptional eye appeal for the grade.
