The Philadelphia Mint produced only 165,100 examples in 1843. PCGS estimates that approximately 3,500 survive today across all grades—only about 2.1% of the original mintage. That means roughly 97.9% no longer survive, with countless examples likely lost through melting, exportation, heavy circulation and nearly two centuries of attrition.
This impressive survivor retains strong XF-level detail throughout Liberty, the shield, eagle and surrounding lettering. Its deeply toned surfaces display attractive orange and golden highlights when tilted under natural light, giving the coin wonderful old-silver character and eye appeal.
