The History of the Girondins is an eight-volume work by Alphonse de Lamartine, firstpublished in 1847. The subject is historical, linked to the French Revolution , but the focus is political, on the eve of the French Revolution of 1848. Although it fell out of favor, suffering from the general discrediting of Romantic works and criticism of the author\'s weaknesses as a historian , it was one of the greatest publishing successes of the 19th century, and remains a major work by Lamartine. From 1840 onwards, Lamartine\'s political ambition as an opponent of Louis-Philippe \'s monarchy predominated. He devoted his leisure time to the History of the Girondins, written at the Château de Monceau, which he had owned since 1834, in the \"Solitude\" pavilion, also known since then as the \"Pavillon des Girondins\". The work was addressed to the people, to whom it aimed to give \"a high lesson in revolutionary morality, capable of instructing and restraining them on the eve of a revolution\", in order to avoid a new 1793.

This 1847 First Edition came in numerous forms and styles - eight separate volumes (8 books consuming quite a bit of shelf space); 4 books combining two volumes per book (this one); and a large 2-book set packing all eight volumes into both. The work also came illustrated an un-illustrated, as this one is. In this case, this shelf-saving set may be a benefit.
