Illustrated with period views and plans, including Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, Port of Tyre, Town and Lake of Tiberias, Egyptian river craft, architectural subjects, and a folding plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.PROVENANCE: This copy bears the ownership/bookplate of Henry D. Gilpin (1801–1860), the 14th Attorney General of the United States under President Martin Van Buren, who served from 1840 to 1841. Gilpin was a prominent Philadelphia lawyer, public official, author, and cultural figure. The provenance adds particular historical interest to this already scarce 1850 travel volume.
