Original 1852 campaign biography of Franklin Pierce, published while he was the Democratic candidate for president of the United States.
“The Life of Gen. Franklin Pierce, of New-Hampshire” was written by D. W. Bartlett and issued during the presidential election of 1852. Pierce won that election and subsequently served as the 14th president of the United States from 1853 to 1857.
This copy is identified on the title page as the “Ninth Thousand” and includes a steel-engraved portrait of Pierce. The original dark cloth boards feature an embossed decorative design and partially visible lettering.
An appealing historical artifact for collectors of presidential history, political Americana, New Hampshire history, and 19th-century campaign literature.

CONDITION
Poor, fragile antique condition with extensive wear and evidence of previous moisture exposure.
The original cloth-covered boards have heavy rubbing, fading, soiling, staining, abrasions, exposed board along the edges, bumped corners, and areas of cloth loss. The embossed cover decoration and portions of the title remain visible.
The exterior spine cloth is almost entirely missing, leaving the paper backing and portions of the binding exposed. Loose threads are present at the head of the spine. Both hinges are cracked and weakened, and the boards and text block should be handled very carefully.
The endpapers, frontispiece portrait, title page, and other preliminary pages have extensive foxing, brown spotting, discoloration, and large moisture stains. Additional pages may have foxing, staining, toning, waviness, creases, edge wear, or small tears. A handwritten price notation appears inside the rear cover.
The portrait and printed text remain legible. Completeness has not been verified page by page. This is best suited for historical study, display, restoration, or a collection where the original 1852 publication is more important than condition.
