1859 Sombor Serbia Cyrillic Receipt w/ 10kr Austrian Revenue Stamp
Although the paper is thin and slightly smaller than A4 size, as was typical for receipts issued from notebooks during this period, the document is remarkably well preserved and contains important historical information.
1. Date of the document
The document was issued on 14 June 1859.
At the end of the main text, above the blue-underlined line on the right, the date is clearly written:
“14. Iunia 1859.”
(14 June 1859)
2. What does the document say?
At the top is the title, written in elegant handwritten script:
The main text is a confirmation of the receipt of a sum of money. In modern Serbian, its meaning is approximately:
“That I have received twenty-two forints and eighty kreuzers in silver, which I personally lent, and which belongs to ... the church treasury. As proof thereof, this receipt is issued to Mr. Joann Brod. Certified in Sombor on 14 June 1859.”
In the lower right corner is the ornate official signature of the issuer, apparently reading “Joann Kontzberrdg...” (or a similar local surname from the Vojvodina region), followed by the title “Plenipot.”, an abbreviation of Plenipotentiary — an authorized representative or agent.
At the bottom left is a brief notation of the monetary amount in forints and silver kreuzers, marked C.M. (Convention Münze).
3. The “10kr” inscription and Austrian revenue stamp
Affixed to the left side of the receipt is an Austrian 10-kreuzer revenue stamp, from the early series of Austrian imperial revenue stamps.
In 1859, Sombor was part of the Austrian Empire, within the administrative territory of the Voivodeship of Serbia and Banat of Temeschwar. Financial transactions and the issuing of receipts were subject to state stamp duties, which were paid by affixing an appropriate revenue stamp.
The stamp has been cancelled by a handwritten ink line, preventing it from being reused.
Factors contributing to the historical and collectible interest of this document
- Local history – Sombor: Collectors interested in the history of Sombor and Vojvodina may particularly value documents that explicitly name the city and provide a direct connection to its 19th-century history.
- Slavonic-Serbian language and Cyrillic script: Original documents from this period written in elegant Cyrillic handwriting in the Serbian/Slavonic-Serbian tradition are considerably less common than comparable documents from the same period written in German or Hungarian.
- Excellent preservation: The revenue stamp is complete, the paper has no tears or ink burn-through, and the handwriting remains exceptionally clear and fresh, making this a particularly attractive example for its category.
Size: Slightly smaller than A4
The document will be stored and shipped in a protective plastic sleeve with cardboard protection.
