Original 1860 pamphlet titled “Notice of M. Mignet”, issued by the Massachusetts Historical Society, presented by prominent American statesman and historian Robert C. Winthrop to noted Boston antiquarian Mellen Chamberlain.
6 x 9 1/4, 9 pages
This is a true presentation copy, bearing a contemporary handwritten inscription on the front wrapper:
“Hon. Mellen Chamberlain with the kind regards of Robt. C. Winthrop”
Winthrop (1809–1894), former Speaker of the U.S. House and longtime president of the Massachusetts Historical Society, was a central figure in 19th-century American intellectual and political life. Chamberlain (1821–1900) was a respected historian and librarian, making this an excellent association piece between two important figures in American historical Notice of M. Mignet
