1861 Original Handwritten Index for John Gill\'s Commentary V.1-9 Samuel Smith Sr For Sale

This is a handwritten index for Volumes 1 through 9 of John Gill’s Commentary (John Gill\'s Exposition of the Whole Bible) by Samuel Smith Senior.John Gill\'s Exposition of the Whole Bible was written by John Gill between 1746 and 1763 and was considered the most important work of his life. This index was written by Samuel Smith in 1857-1861 and covers all nine volumes of John Gill\'s major work. There are nine sections (one for each volume of the commentary). On the last page of the index for volume 9 he wrote \"Finished on Saturday February 9th 1861 by Samuel Smith\" at the bottom. Each of the sections is dated in this manner. The days of the week do indeed match the stated dates. The end of the first section is dated Tuesday April 7 1857, so this was an endeavor created between 1857 and 1861 over about four years. In some places Mr. Smith signed his name and in other places he wrote his name in print letters. At the end of volume 2 he writes his name as \"Samuel Smith Sen\" (senior).At some point an enclosure (a clamshell typebox) was made to contain this.My guess is the box was made in the 20th century. The label on the box says \"INDEX TO DR. GILL\'S COMMENTARY\". The pages are not entirely loose. There are remnants of stitching on the left edges and they are somewhat connected. Some pages are very smeary or stained or have flakes of paper missing.Historical registries show a Reverend Samuel Smith Senior who was an active, highly literate minister and theological writer in Britain during the mid-1800s. He was intimately connected to the Gospel Herald and strict Reformed Baptist networks. Pastors of this specific tradition often spent years creating private indices to the works of Gill and the Puritans to help prepare their complex, doctrine-heavy sermons. I do not know with certainty if this is the same Samuel Smith.As far as I know this index was never published. All together it is several hundred pages long. I believe thisdocumentis a unique religious artifact of the Victorian era and there is no other.Buyer pays $6 S/H in the U.S.
