Appleton & Company, New York, this is theFourth Edition, printed the same year as the first American appearance of this celebrated defense of Newman’s religious convictions.

Newman’sApologiaremains one of the greatest spiritual autobiographies ever written and is an essential work for collectors of Catholic history, Victorian literature, and nineteenth-century theology.

This copy is in solid, honest antique condition. The original green cloth binding remains intact, with the original spine label still present, though worn and showing loss at the head and edges. The binding is secure, and the text block remains tight with no loose pages noted. The pages are clean overall with expected age toning and scattered foxing or light staining consistent with a book that is more than 160 years old.

Several interesting marks of provenance add to the book’s history. There is an old embossed bookseller’s stamp fromMcCabe’s Catholic Book & Print Seller, San Francisco, an early library call number, an old library pocket inside the rear cover, and a tasteful Victorian ownership bookplate forJoseph M.
