A handsome complete set of the first edition of George Grote’s monumental study of Plato and the Socratic philosophers, published by John Murray in 1865. Grote, celebrated author of the History of Greece, produced one of the defining Victorian-era examinations of Platonic philosophy, treating Plato within the broader intellectual circle of Socrates and the development of ancient Greek thought.
Complete in three substantial volumes, each retaining its original 1865 title page. Bound in attractive period half brown leather over marbled boards, with raised bands, gilt-ruled compartments and gilt-lettered spine labels; marbled endpapers and gilt top edges. The bindings display considerable but appealing age-related rubbing and scuffing, particularly to the spines, joints and extremities, with areas of surface leather loss as photographed. The marbled boards likewise show expected wear. Despite this exterior patina, the set remains remarkably attractive on the shelf. Internally quite well preserved for its age, with generally clean, bright leaves and only occasional minor spotting or marks.
An increasingly uncommon complete first-edition set of Grote’s important contribution to nineteenth-century classical scholarship, particularly desirable in its matched period bindings. A substantial and visually impressive work devoted to Plato, Socrates, Greek philosophy, and the intellectual world of classical Athens.
