Popular Tales by Maria Edgeworth, with original designs by William Croome. Philadelphia: Duffield Ashmead, 724 Chestnut Street, 1867. “A New Edition.”
A handsome 19th-century American edition of Edgeworth\'s Popular Tales, originally published in 1804. This volume contains five works: Murad the Unlucky, The Manufacturers, The Contrast, The Grateful Negro, and To-Morrow.
Bound in the original green publisher\'s cloth, with decorative blind-stamped boards and an especially attractive ornate gilt-decorated spine, including the title, author\'s name, publisher and pictorial scroll motif. Illustrated with original designs credited to Croome.
Condition: Good antique condition overall. Original cloth binding shows rubbing and edge wear, with wear/loss at the head and foot of the spine and bumped/worn corners. Gilt spine decoration remains bright and attractive. Interior shows age toning, scattered foxing/spotting and other expected signs of age. Please see photographs for condition and contents.
A lovely Civil War-era American edition of one of Maria Edgeworth\'s best-known collections, with an unusually decorative Victorian binding.
