Rights of American Citizens — Message from the President of the United States, issued during the 40th Congress, 2nd Session, House of Representatives, Executive Document No. 157, dated February 10, 1868.

An original 1868 U.S. Congressional document from the administration of President Andrew Johnson, concerning the trial and conviction of American citizens in England for Fenianism. The opening document includes President Andrew Johnson\'s response to the House of Representatives and correspondence from Secretary of State William H. Seward.

The volume contains extensive testimony and government documentation concerning American citizens, Great Britain, Ireland, Fenianism, arrests, trials, imprisonment, and questions surrounding the rights and protection of American citizens abroad.

This is a substantial volume extending to at least several hundred pages.

Binding: This copy has clearly been rebound, presumably well after its original 1868 publication. It is now in an attractive custom binding with a brown leather spine and corners, gilt spine lettering reading “Johnson – Rights of American Citizens” and “1868,” and decorative marbled-paper boards. The binding is NOT the original 1868 binding.

Condition: Antique condition. The later binding remains attractive but shows wear, particularly at the spine ends and corners, including some leather loss/fraying. Text pages show expected age toning, occasional spotting/soiling, edge wear and other signs of age. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
