A visually striking Victorian movable children’s book containing four full-page chromolithographic scenes with articulated, tab-operated figures and brilliant metallic-gold backgrounds.

Published in Fürth by pioneering movable-book publisher Carl Schaller, this is the scarce English-language four-picture issue of The Golden Book. All four principal movable illustrations belonging to this issue are present.

This book should not be confused with the earlier 1885 edition published by Schaller & Kirn under the title The Golden Book: Six Movable Pictures with Appropriate Verses for Well-Behaved Children.

The present issue differs from that edition in several respects:

• Four movable pictures rather than six
• Carl Schaller’s sole publisher’s mark
• Different pictorial cover
• Differently designed title page
• Distinct four-picture configuration documented in specialist research

The book is therefore catalogued as an intentional four-picture Carl Schaller issue—not as a six-picture copy missing two plates. The precise publication date is not stated; circa 1885–1890 is a reasonable attribution following the end of the Schaller & Kirn partnership.

Each scene combines colorful Victorian chromolithography, English verse, decorative initials and metallic-gold backgrounds with concealed paper mechanisms.

All four principal scenes are present:

Fair, with significant binding and structural defects. Offered as found.

The text block is detached from the original pictorial boards, with the original staples visible. The boards are heavily rubbed and soiled, with substantial edge and corner wear, losses to the paper covering, and splitting and wear to the cloth spine.

The leaves exhibit irregular edge chipping, short tears, creasing, toning, handling marks and localized losses. Some blank or separating leaves are chipped and partially detached.

All four principal movable chromolithographic scenes belonging to this issue are present. Three mechanisms function substantially as intended. On the musical scene, the bird operates while the musician’s arm remains stationary.

The principal chromolithographs retain strong color, and the metallic-gold backgrounds remain exceptionally bright despite the book’s structural condition.

No claim is made that every minor tab, connector, tissue, blank or internal mechanical component survives. No restoration has been undertaken.
